58. கண்ணோட்டம்
கண்ணோட்டம் என்னும் கழிபெருங் காரிகை
உண்மையான் உண்டிவ் வுலகு. 571கண்ணோட்டம் என்று சொல்லப்படும் மிகச்
சிறந்த அழகு இருக்கும் காரணத்தால் தான்
இந்த உலகம் அழியாமல் இருக்கின்றது.
Kural-571
Since true benignity, that grace exceeding great, resides
In Kingly souls, world in happy state abides.
The world exists through the greatest ornament(of princes),
a gracious demeanour.
கண்னோட்டத் துள்ளது உலகியல் அஃதிலார்
உண்மை நிலைக்குப் பொறை. 572
கண்ணோட்டத்தினால்தான் உலக வாழ்க்கை
நடைபெறுகின்றது. கண்களால் எதையும்
தெரிந்து கொள்ள முடியாதவர் உயிருடன் இருப்பது
நிலத்துக்கு சுமை.
Kural-572
The world goes on its wonted way, since grace benign is there;
All other men are burthen for the earth to bear.
The prosperity of the world springs from the kindliness,
The existence of those who have no (kindliness) is a
Burden to the earth.
பண்என்னாம் பாடற்கு இயைபின்றேல் கண்என்னாம்
கண்ணோட்டம் இல்லாத கண். 573
பாடலோடு பொருந்தாவிட்டால் இசையால் என்ன பயன்?
அதுபோல, கண்ணோட்டமில்லாவிடில் கண்களால்
என்ன பயன்?

where not accordant with the song, what use of sounding chords?
What gain of eye that no benignant light affords?
Of what avail is a song if it be inconsistent with harmony?
What is the use of eyes which possess no kindliness.
உளபோல் முகத்தவன் செய்யும் அளவினால்
கண்ணோட்டம் இல்லாத கண். 574
அளவுப்படிக் கண்ணோட்டம் இல்லாத கண்கள்
முகத்தில் இருப்பன போல் தோன்றுமே தவிர
அதனால் ஒரு பிரயோஜனமும் இல்லை.
Kural-574
The seeming eye of face gives no expressive light,
when not with duly meted kindness bright.
Beyond appearing to be in the face, what good
do they do, those eyes in which is no well-regulated
kindness?
கண்ணிற்கு அணிகலம் கண்ணோட்டம் அஃதின்றேல்
புண்ணென்று உணரப் படும். 575
கண்களுக்கு அழகு கண்ணொட்டம். அது இல்லாத
கண்கள் புண் என்றே சொல்லப்படும்.
Kural-575
Benignity is eyes' adorning grace;
without it eyes are wounds disfiguring face.
Kind looks are the ornaments of the eyes;
Without these they will be considered
(By the wise) to be merely two sores.

58. கண்ணோட்டம்
மண்ணோ டியைந்த மரத்தனையர் கண்ணோ
டியைந்துகண் ணோடா தவர். 576
கண்களால் தீர்மானிக்க வல்ல கண்னோட்டமுடையவர்,
அதைப் பயன்படுத்தாதிருந்தால் மரத்துக்கு
சமமானவராவார்.
Kural-576
Whose eyes 'neath brow infixed diffuse no ray
Of grace; like tree in earth infixed are they.
They resemble the trees of the earth, who although
they have eyes, never look kindly (on others).
கண்ணோட்டம் இல்லவர் கண்ணிலர் கண்ணுடையார்
கண்ணோட்டம் இன்மையும் இல். 577
கண்ணோட்டம் இல்லாதவர் குருடர்களுக்கு ஒப்பானவரே.
ஆனால் கண் பார்வை பெற்ற எல்லோரும் கண்களால்
எடைபோட்டு விடுவார்கள்.
Kural-577
Eyeless are they whose eyes with no benignant lusre shine;
Who've eyes can never lack the light of grace benign.
Men without kind looks are men without eyes; those
Who (really) have eyes are also not devoid of kind looks.
கருமஞ் சிதையாமல் கண்ணோட வல்லார்க்கு
உரிமை உடைத்திவ் வுலகு. 578
தன் தொழிலுக்குப் பங்கம் வராமல் கண்ணோட்டம்
உடையவராக இருந்தால் இந்த உலகம் அவருக்கு
உரிமை உடையதாகும்.
Kural-578
Who can benignant smile, yet leave no work undone;
By them as very own may all the earth be won.
The world is theirs (kings) who are able to show
Kindness, without injury to their affairs (administration
of justice).
ஒறுத்தாற்றும் பண்பினார் கண்ணும்கண் ணோடிப்
பொறுத்தாற்றும் பண்பே தலை. 579
தண்டித்து அடக்க வேண்டியவரிடத்தும் கண்ணோட்டம்
செய்து அவர் செய்த குற்றத்தைப் பொறுத்துக் காக்கும்
தன்மையே சிறந்தது.
Kural-579
To smile on those that vex, with kindly face,
Enduring long, is most excelling grace.
Patiently to bear with,and show kindness to
Those who grieve us, is the most excellent of
all dispositions.
பெயக்கண்டும் நஞ்சுண் டமைவர் நயத்தக்க
நாகரிகம் வேண்டுபவர். 580
யாவரும் போற்றுகின்ற நாகரிகமான கண்ணோட்டத்தை
விரும்புகின்றவர் பழகியவர் தனக்கு நஞ்சிடக் கண்டும்
அதை மௌனமாக உண்டுவிடுவர்.
Kural-580
They drink with smiling grace, though poison interfused they see,
Who seek the praise of all-esteemed courtesy.
Those who desire ( to cultivate that degree of ) urbanity
which all shall love, even after swallowing the poison
served to them by their friends, will be friendly with them.

59. ஒற்றாடல்
ஒற்றும் உரைசான்ற நூலும் இவையிரண்டும்
தெற்றென்க மன்னவன் கண். 581
ஒற்றறிதலும், புகழ் படைத்த நீதி நூலும் ஆகிய இரண்டையும்
அரசன் தன் கண்களெனத் தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும்.
Kural-581
These two: the code renowned and spies,
In these let king confide as eyes.
Let a king consider as his eyes these two
things, a spy and a book ( of laws) universally
Esteemed.
எல்லார்க்கும் எல்லாம் நிகழ்பவை எஞ்ஞான்றும்
வல்லறிதல் வேந்தன் தொழில். 582
எல்லோரிடத்தும் நடக்கின்றவை எல்லாவற்றையும்
எப்பொழுதும் ஒற்றர்களைக் கொண்டு சீக்கிரமாகத்
தெரிந்து கொள்வது அரசன் தொழில்.
Kural-582
Each day , of every subject every deed,
'Tis duty of the king to learn with speed.
It is the duty of the king to know quickly (by a spy)
What all happens, daily, amongst all men.
ஒற்றினான் ஒற்றிப் பொருள்தெரியா மன்னவன்
கொற்றங் கொளக்கிடந்து இல். 583
நாட்டு நிகழ்ச்சிகளை ஒற்றரால் அறிந்து அவற்றின்
நன்மை தீமைகளை ஆராய்ந்துணராத அரசனுக்கு
வெற்றிபெற வேறு வழி இல்லை.
Kural-583
By spies who spies, not weighing things they bring,
Nothing can victory give to that unwary king.
There is no way for a king to obtain conquests,
who knows not the advantage of discoveries
made by a spy.
வினைசெய்வார் தம்சுற்றம் வேண்டாதார் என்றாங்கு
அனைவரையும் ஆராய்வது ஒற்று. 584
தன் காரியத்தைச் செய்பவர், உறவினர், பகைவர் என
அனைவரையும் ஆராய்பவனே ஒற்றன்.
Kural-584
His officers, his friends,his enemies,
All these who watch are trusty spies.
He is a spy who watches all men, to wit,
those who are in the king's employment,
his relatives, and his enemies.
கடாஅ உருவொடு கண்ணஞ்சாது யாண்டும்
உகாஅமை வல்லதே ஒற்று. 585
மற்றவர் சந்தேகப்படாதபடி ஒப்பனை செய்து கொண்டு,
மற்றவரின் கண்பார்வையை நேருக்கு நேர் உற்று
நோக்கினாலும் எந்த இடத்திலும் தன் அந்தரங்கத்தைச்
சொல்லாமல் இருக்க வல்லவனே சிறந்த ஒற்றன்.
Kural-585
Of unsuspected mien and all-unfearing eyes,
who let no secret out, are trusty spies.
A spy is one who is able to assume an appearance
which may create no suspicion( in the minds of others),
who fears no man's face, and who never reveals (his purpose).
துறந்தார் படிவத்த ராகி இறந்தாராய்ந்து
என்செயினும் சோர்விலது ஒற்று. 586
தவக்கோலம் பூண்டு அரிய இடங்களுக்குச் சென்று
ஆராய்ந்து, சந்தேகம் கொண்டவர் என்ன துன்பம்
விளைவித்தாலும் சோர்ந்து விடாமாலிருப்பவரே
சிறந்த வேவுகாரர்.
Kural-586
As monk or devotee, through every hindrance making way,
A spy, whate'er men do, must watchful mind display.
He is spy who, assuming the appearance of an ascetic,
goes into (whatever place he wishes),examines into
(all that is needful), and never discovers himself,
whatever may be done to him.
மறைந்தவை கேட்கவற் றாகி அறிந்தவை
ஐயப்பாடு இல்லதே ஒற்று. 587
ரகசியமான செய்திகளைக் கேட்டறிய வல்லவனாகவும்,
அப்படித் தெரிந்து கொண்ட சமாசாரங்களை சந்தேகமின்றி
தைரியமாக சொல்லக்கூடியவனாகவும் இருப்பவனே ஒற்றன்.
Kural-587
A spy must search each hidden matter out,
And full report must render, free from doubt.
A spy is one who is able to discover what is hidden
and who retains no doubt concerning what he has
known.
ஒற்றொற்றித் தந்த பொருளையும் மற்றுமோர்
ஒற்றினால் ஒற்றிக் கொளல். 588
ஓர் ஒற்றர் அறிந்துவந்து சொன்ன செய்தியை மற்றோர்
ஒற்றரால் கேட்டுவரச் செய்து இரண்டையும் ஒப்பிட்டுப்
பார்த்து உண்மையைத் தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும்.
Kural-588
Spying by spies, the things they tell
To test by other spies is well.
Let not a king receive the information which a
Spy has discovered and made known to him,
until he has examined it by another spy.
ஒற்றொற் றுணராமை ஆள்க உடன்மூவர்
சொல்தொக்க தேறப் படும். 589
ஓர் ஒற்றனை மற்றோர் ஒற்றன் அறியாதபடி ஆள
வேண்டும். அப்படி ஏவப்பட்ட மூன்று ஒற்றர்களின்
விஷயங்களும் ஒத்திருந்தால் உண்மை என்று ஏற்றுக்
கொள்ளலாம்.
Kural-589
One spy must not another see: contrive it so;
And things by three confirmed as truth you know.
Let a king employ spies so that one may have no
knowledge of the other; and when the information
of three agrees together, let him receive it.
சிறப்பறிய ஒற்றின்கண் செய்யற்க செய்யின்
புறப்படுத்தா னாகும் மறை. 590
அரசன் ஒற்றர்களுக்குச் செய்யும் சிறப்பை பிறர்
அறியும்படிச் செய்யக்கூடாது. அப்படிச் செய்தால்
தன் இரகசியத்தைத் தானே அம்பலப் படுத்தியதாகும்
Kural-590
Reward not trusty spy in others' sight,
Or all the mystry will come to light.
Let not a king publicly confer on a spy any marks of
His favour; if he does , he will divulge his own secret.

60. ஊக்கம் உடைமை
உடைய ரெனப்படுவது ஊக்கம் அஃதிலார்
உடையது உடையரோ மற்று. 591
ஊக்கம் உடையவரையே உடையவர் என்று சொல்லலாம்.
ஊக்கம் இல்லாதவர் எத்தனை பேறுகளைப் பெற்றிருந்தாலும்
உடையவர் ஆவாரோ?
Kural-591
What is said as possession is the ordour; in its
Absence have they possession, whether having all
others?
What is said as opulance owned by one is the
Fervency only; in its non-entity , the other things
whatever be they possessed, are not considered as
Possession equivalent to it.
உள்ளம் உடைமை உடைமை பொருளுடமை
நில்லாது நீங்கி விடும். 592
ஊக்கம் உடைமையே ஒருவருக்கு நிலையான
உடைமையாகும். மற்ற செல்வங்களெல்லாம்
நிலையற்று நீங்கிவிடும்.
Kural-592
Possession of earnestness is the possession only;
possession of opulence unstably slips away.
Having ardour is only the wealth for men which is
Contantly useful; having abundant opulence is
impermanent but will slip away from its owner.
ஆக்கம் இழந்தேமென்று அல்லாவார் ஊக்கம்
ஒருவந்தம் கைத்துடை யார். 593
ஊக்கத்தை உறுதியான செல்வமாகக் கொண்டவர்
பொருளை இழந்து விட்டக் காலத்திலும் பறிபோனதே
என்று இடிந்து போகமாட்டார்.
Kural-593
They won't become distressed as they lost opulence;
If they were possessed as handy, the fervence.
Men will not lose heart even if they lost possessions;
If they are ever having ardour to do and win things.
ஆக்கம் அதர்வினாய்ச் செல்லும் அசைவிலா
ஊக்க முடையா னுழை. 594
தளர்விலா ஊக்கம் உடையவனிடத்தில் செல்வமானது
தானே அவன் இருக்கும் இடத்திற்கு வழி கேட்டுக்
கொண்டு செல்லும்.
Kural- 594
The fortune volunteers such one, and reaches,
Who's firmly zealous enquiring his place.
The Goddess of riches by her self reaches such man
searching for his residence who is fixedly earnest
in performing actions.
வெள்ளத் தனைய மலர்நீட்டம் மாந்தர்தம்
உள்ளத் தனையது உயர்வு. 595
நீர்ப் பூக்களின் தண்டின் நீளம் அவை நிற்கும்
நீரின் அளவே வளரும். அதுபோல மனிதற்கு
ஊக்கத்தின் அளவே முன்னேற்றம் இருக்கும்.
Kural-595
The length of lotus stalk is as deep as water;
The eminence is as walk of their own ardour.
The length of the stalk of lotus is as deep as the
Water in which it grows; so also, the excellence
of man is also as much as his fervency is.
உள்ளுவ தெல்லாம் உயர்வுள்ளல் மற்றது
தள்ளினும் தள்ளாமை நீர்த்து. 596
எண்ணுவதெல்லாம் உயர்வாகவே எண்ண வேண்டும்.
அது கைகூடும் வரை நினைப்பதை விடக் கூடாது.
Kural-596
What all those thought should be the excellent;
Though were it thrust shouldn't shun that state.
All the thought whatever be thought by a king
should be good;even then they were not successful,
he should not give up or slip from that state of
thinking.
சிதைவிடத்து ஒல்கார் உரவோர் புதையம்பிற்
பட்டுப்பா டூன்றும் களிறு. 597
அம்பு மழையால் தன் உடம்பு புண்பட்ட போதும்
யானை தளராது கம்பீரமாய் நின்று பெருமையை
நிலை நாட்டும். அதுபோல ஊக்கம் உடையவர்
சாகும் வரை தளர மாட்டார்.
Kural-597
Pierced by many dart the tusker remains ardent;
The ardent man won't be feeble but fervent.
The fervent one will not loose his heart during calamities
but will be stubborn;even though many arrows pierced
into the body and injured, the elephant in war, will not
Afraid of opponents but firmly stand and oppose them.
உள்ளம் இலாதவர் எய்தார் உலகத்து
வள்ளியம் என்னும் செருக்கு. 598
ஊக்கம் இல்லாதவர் உலகில் நாம் வண்மை
உடையவன் என்று எண்ணி ஆனந்தப்படும்
அருகதை இல்லாதவர்.
Kural-598
Men who aren't ardent can't enjoy by themselves
In world with saying, conceit, I am the man of riches.
The persons who have no fervency cannot be proud
of saying themselves the proud wording; that they
are strengthy ones with riches.
திபரியது கூர்ங்கோட்டது ஆயினும் யானை
வெரூஉம் புலிதாக் குறின். 599
யானை பெரிய உடம்பையும் , கூரிய தந்தங்களையும்
உடையது ஆனாலும் ஊக்கமுள்ள புலி தாக்கினால்
அதற்கு பயப்படும்.
Kural-599
Though elephant is large having pointed tusks
Will afraid of a tiger to fight against when attacks.
Even though the elephant is larger than any wild
Animal and have two strong pointed solid Ivories;
It fears for a tiger which is smaller than itself, when
it happens to fight against it.
உரமொருவற்கு உள்ள வெறுக்கைஅஃதி லார்
மரம்மக்க ளாதலே வேறு. 600
ஒருவரின் பலம் மிகுதியான ஊக்கமே. ஊக்கம்
இல்லாதவர் மரங்களே. வடிவத்தால் மனிதரைப்
போலிருக்கிறார்கள்.

Ardour is sharp intellect; Those who lack it.
Are trees while consider, human shape 's dissimilar.
The fervency of a person is the intelligence in him;
Those who have no such ardour seem to be trees
while we examine their shape as a human is different
but the statue made of wood.
