செயற்கரிய யாவுள நட்பின் அது போல்
வினைக்கரிய யாவுள காப்பு. 781
உயர்ந்த நட்பை அடைவதைப் போன்ற அரிய செயலும்
உலகில் இல்லை. அதுபோல பகைவர் செயலைத் தடுப்பதும்
காத்துக்கொள்வதும் மிகக் கடினம். அத் தொழிலுக்குக்
காவலாக இருப்பதும் எதுவும் இல்லை!.
What is rare else
Than making friends;
What's else, likewise
protection for the deeds.
What is the rare thing other than making friendship; after made friends,
what is there a saviour to obstruct the misdeeds done by the enemies.

நிறைநீர நீரவர் கேண்மை பிறைமதிப்
பின்நீர பேதையார் நட்பு. 782
அறிவுடையோர் நட்பு மூன்றாம் பிறை வளர்வதைப்
போல் நாளும் வளரும். கீழ் மக்களின் நட்பு
பௌர்ணமி போல் தொடங்கி நாளுக்கு நாள் தேயும்.
Good amity increases
Like the Waxing moon;
Fools' friendship decreases
like the vaning moon.
The fiendship with gentlemen of good characters increases
Day by day, whereas the amity of foolish and mean men
decreases like the waning moon day by day.

நவில்தொறும் நூல்நயம் போலும் பயில்தொறும்
பண்புடை யாளர் தொடர்பு. 783
நல்ல புத்தகங்களின் பொருள், படிக்கும் போதெல்லாம்
மகிழ்ச்சியைத் தரும். அதுபோல நற்குணங்களுடையவர்களின்
நட்பு பழகப் பழக இன்பம் தரும்.
Like fineness in books
Vivid as go on reading
The more the good friendship's
The more the increasing.
The friendship with good men as acquainted, increases in course of time,
Resembles to the knowledge which becomes lucid as one goes
through a treatise for several times.

நகுதற் பொருட்டன்று நட்டல் மிகுதிக்கண்
மேற்சென்று இடித்தற் பொருட்டு. 784
நட்புக் கொள்வது சிரித்து மகிழ்வதற்காக மட்டும் அல்ல.
நண்பர் நெறிதவறி நடக்கும்போது முன் சென்று
இடித்துரைக்க வேண்டும்.
Making friendship is
Not only to amuse
To surpass and admonish
When deviates virtues.
Friendship with others is not intended only to make them merry or
laugh; but it is to excel the friend while he goes beyond morality
and admonish him.

புணர்ச்சி பழகுதல் வேண்டா உணர்ச்சிதான்
நட்பாம் கிழமை தரும். 785
நட்புக் கொள்வதற்குத் தொடர்பும், பழக்கமும் வேண்டியதில்லை.
உணர்ச்சியால் ஒன்றுபடுதலே நட்பை ஏற்படுத்தும்.
There is no need for
Acquaintance or union together,
Feeling between each other
Makes friendship closer.
To make friends with each other, there is no necessity for familiarity
Often or meeting then and there. Congenial feeling between each other
makes them close friends.

முகநக நட்பது நட்பன்று நெஞ்சத்து
அகநக நட்பது நட்பு. 786
முகம் மலரும்படிப் பேசுவது மட்டும் நட்பாகாது.
மனத்தால் மகிழும்படி நட்புக் கொள்வதே உயர்ந்த நட்பு.
It is not the friendship
To smile only on face;
But 'tis the friendship
To smile from the heart cause.
It is not at all a friendship to smile outward only without inner feeling
while seeing a friend; but it is the attitude of smile caused from the
Heart.

அழிவி னவைநீக்கி ஆறுய்த்து அழிவின்கண்
அல்லல் உழப்பதாம் நட்பு. 787
அழிவுதரும் தீமைகளிலிருந்து நீக்கி, நல்ல வழியில்
நடக்கச் செய்து அழிவு வந்த காலத்தில் கூட இருந்து
துன்பப்படுவதே நட்பு.
To deprive of the ruin
To guide to good way an'
To suffer burden of mishap
Is the good friendship.
While the friend goes on ruinous ways, he should be bereaved of such
bad ways to bring him to good ways and also to suffer jointly the
load of ill-luck caused miraculously is said to be the real friendship.

உடுக்கை இழந்தவன் கைபோல ஆங்கே
இடுக்கண் களைவதாம் நட்பு. 788
ஆடை நெகிழும் போது கை விரைந்து சென்று
அதைச் சரி செய்யும். அதுபோல நண்பனுக்குத்
துன்பம் வரும்போது உடனே அதைப் போக்க
முயற்சிப்பதே உயர்ந்த நட்பு.
Just like hands help
While one's dress slip
Whenever happens mishap
R'dressing it, is friendship.
As same as the hands of a person go forthwith to tie up
again his dress while it slips to save him from disgrsce,
When a friend is entangled in a mishap, assuage it
immediately by rendering suitable help,it is said to be
Real friendship.

ஒல்லும்வாய் ஊன்றும் நிலை. 789
நட்புக்கு உயர்ந்த நிலை என்னவென்றால் அது
எப்போதும் வித்தியாசமின்றி இயன்றபோதெல்லாம்
உதவி செய்து தாங்குவதே.

இவர் எனக்கு இந்த அளவு பிரியமானவர், நான் இவருக்கு
இந்த அளவு நெருக்கமானவன் என்று பெருமையாகச்
சொன்னாலும் நட்பின் மதிப்பு குறைந்துவிடும்.
