செய்யாமற் செய்த உதவிக்கு வையகமும்
வானகமும் ஆற்ற லரிது.                      101

தான் முன்பு ஓர் உதவியும் செய்யாமலிருக்க
பிறர் தனக்கு ஓர் உதவி செய்தால் அதற்கு
பூலோகத்தையும், சொர்க்கத்தையும் ஈடாகக்
கொடுத்தாலும் போதாது.

Assistance given by those who ne'er received our aid,
Is debt by gift of heaven and earth but poorly paid.

( The gift of ) heaven and earth is not an equivalent for a
benefit which is conferred where none had been received.


காலத்தி னாற்செய்த நன்றி சிறிதெனினும்
ஞாலத்தின் மாணப் பெரிது.                         102

தக்க சமயத்தில் ஒருவர் செய்யும் உதவி சிறியதாக
இருந்தாலும், அது இந்த உலகத்தை விடப் பெரியதாகும்.

A timely benefit, though thing of little  worth,
The gift itself,-in excellence trancends the earth.

A favour conferred in the time of need, though
it be small (in itself), is ( in value) much larger than the world.



பயன்தூக்கார் செய்த உதவி நயன்தூக்கின்
நன்மை கடலிற் பெரிது.                         103

பிரதி பலனை எதிர்பார்க்காமல் ஒருவர் செய்யும்
உபகாரத்தில் உள்ள அன்பை ஆராய்ந்தால் அது
கடலை விடப் பரந்ததாகும்.

kindness shown by those who weigh not what  the  return may be;
When you ponder right its merit,'Tis vaster than the sea.

If  we weigh the excellence of  a benefit which is conferred without
weighing the return, it is larger than the sea.


தினைத்துணை நன்றி செயினும் பனைத்துணையாக்
கொள்வர் பயன்தெரி வார்                           104

ஒருவர் தினையளவு நல்லது செய்தாலும்,அதன்
பயனை ஆராயும் நல்லவர் அதைப் பனையளவினதாகக்
கருதுவர்.

Each benefit tothose of actions' fruit who rightly deem,
Though small as millet-seed, as palm- tree vast will seem.

Though the benefit conferred be as small  as a millet seed,
those who know its advantage will consider it as large as
a palmyra fruit.



உதவி வரைத்தன்று உதவி உதவி
செயப்பட்டார் சால்பின் வரைத்து.                105

ஒருவர் முன் செய்த உதவியைக் கணக்கிட்டு
நாம் உதவ முற்படுதல் தவறு. உதவி செய்தவரின்
அன்பு மனம் கண்டு கணக்குப் பாராமல் உதவ வேண்டும்.

The kindly aid's extent is of its worth no measure  true;
Its worth is as the worth of him to whom the act you do.

The benefit itself is not the measure of the benefit, the
worth of those who have received it is its measure.



மறவற்க மாசற்றார் கேண்மை துறவற்க
துன்பத்துள் துப்பாயர் நட்பு.                      106

குற்றமற்றவரின் உறவை மறக்கக் கூடாது.
துன்பம் வந்த காலத்தில் உதவியர்களின் நட்பை
விடக் கூடாது.

Kindness of men of stainless soul remenber evermore!
Forsake thou never friends who were thy stay in sorrow sore!

Forsake not the friendship of those who have been your staff
in adversity. Forget not be benevolence of the blameless.


எழுமை எழுபிறப்பும் உள்ளுவர் தங்கண்
விழுமந் துடைத்தவர் நட்பு.                     107

தன்னுடைய துன்பத்தைப் போக்கியவரின் நட்பை
ஏழு பிறப்பிலும் மறவாமல் போற்றுவர் சான்றோர்.

Through all seven worlds, in seven-fold birth, Remains  in mem'ry of wise,
Friendship of those who wiped on earth, The tears of sorrow from their eyes.

(The wise) will remember through out their seven-fold  birth the love of those
who have wiped away their affliction.



நன்றி மறப்பது நன்றன்று நன்றல்லது
அன்றே மறப்பது நன்று.                        108

ஒருவர் செய்த உபகாரத்தை மறப்பது தருமமாகாது.
அவர் செய்த தீமையை அப்போதே மறப்பது அறமாகும்.

'Tis never good to let the thought of good things done thee pass away;
Of things not good, 'its good to rid thy memory that very day.

It is not good to forget a benefit; it is good to forget an injury even in the
moment ( in which it is inflicted)


கொன்றன்ன இன்னா செயினும் அவர்செய்த
ஒன்றுநன்று உள்ளக் கெடும்.                        109

முதலில் உதவி செய்தவர், பிறகு கொல்வதைப்
போன்ற கஷ்டத்தைக் கொடுத்தாலும் முன் செய்த
உதவியை நினைக்க, தற்போது செய்த துன்பம் நீங்கும்.

Effaced straight away is deadliest injury,
By thought of one kind act in days gone by.

Though one inflict an injury great as murder,
it will perish before the thought of one benefit (formerly) conferred.

எந்நன்றி கொன்றார்க்கும் உய்வுண்டாம் உய்வில்லை
செய்நன்றி கொன்ற மகற்கு.                             110

எந்த தருமத்தை அழித்தவருக்கும் தப்பிப் பிழைக்க
வழி உண்டு. ஒருவர் செய்த உதவியை மறந்தவருக்கு
விமோசனமே கிடையாது.

who 'benefit' has killed,that man shall ne'er'scape free!

He who has killed every virtue may yet escape; their is no escape
for him who has killed a benefit.

இறைவனை மனத்துள் தரிசித்தவர் வஞ்சனையற்ற,
அன்பு கலந்த, இனிய சொற்களையே பேசுவார்கள்.

Pleasant words are words with all pervading love that burn;
Words from his guileless mouth who can the very truth discern.

Sweet words are those which imbued with love and free from
deceit flow from the mouth of the virtuous.


அகனமர்ந்து ஈதலின் நன்றே முகனமர்ந்து
இன்சொல னாகப் பெறின்.                                 92


மனம் மகிழ்ந்து ஒன்றை ஒருவருக்குக் கொடுப்பதைவிட
முகம் மலர்ந்து இனிய வார்த்தைகள் பேசுவது சிறந்ததாகும்.

Even to gifts with liberal heart conferred.


முகத்தான் அமர்ந்தஇனிது நோக்கி அகத்தானாம்
இன்சோ லினிதே அறம்.                             93

முகத்தில் முறுவல் காட்டி நேசத்தோடு பார்த்து
மனப்பூர்வமாக இனிமையுடன் பேசுவது சிறந்த அறமாகும்.

With brightly beaming smile, and kindly light of loving eye,
And heart sincere,to utter pleasent words is charity.

sweet speech,flowing from the heart(uttered) with a cheerful
countenance and sweet look, is true virtue.



துன்புறூஉந் துவ்வாமை இல்லாகும் யார்மாட்டும்
இன்புறூஉம்  இன்சொ லவர்க்கு.                       94

எல்லோரிடமும் எந்த சந்தர்ப்பத்திலும் இனிமையாகப்
பேசுபவர்களுக்குத் துன்பத்தை உண்டாக்கும் வறுமை
ஏற்படுவதில்லை.

The men of pleasent speech that gladness breath around,
Through indigence shall never sorrow's prey e found.

Sorrow-increasing poverty shall not come upon those who use
towards all,pleasure-increasing sweetness of speech.  


பணிவுடையன் இன்சொலன் ஆதல் ஒருவர்க்கு
அணியல்ல மற்றுப் பிற.                             95

பணிவு உடையவனாகவும், இனியவார்த்தை பேசுபவனாகவும்
இருப்பதே ஒருவருக்கு சிறந்த ஆபரணம். மற்ற ஆபரணங்கள்
சிறந்த ஆபரணமாகா.

Humility with pleasant speech to man on earth,
Is choice adornment; all besides is nothing  worth.

Humility and sweetness of speech are the ornaments of man;
All others are not (ornaments).

அல்லவை தேய அறம்பெருகும் நல்லவை
நாடி இனியசொலின்.                                     96

மற்றவர்களுக்கு நன்மைதரும் சொற்களை ஆராய்ந்து
இனிமையாகச் சொல்பவருக்கு பாவங்கள் குறைந்து
தரும குணம் அதிகரிக்கும்.

Who seeks out good , words from his lips of sweetness flow;
In him the power of vice declines,and virtue grow.

If a man, while seeking to speak usefully, speaks also sweetly,
his sins will diminish and his virtue increase.


நயன்ஈன்று நன்றி பயக்கும் பயன் ஈன்று
பண்பின் தலைப்பிரியாச் சொல்.                  97

பிறருக்கு நற்பயனைக் கொடுத்து நல்ல பண்பிலிருந்து
நீங்காத சொற்கள் , சொல்பவர்களுக்கு நன்மையையும்
சுகத்தையும் தரும்.

The words of sterling sense, to rule of right that strict adhere,
To virtuous action prompting, blessings yield in every  sphere.

That speech which ,while imparting  benefits ceases not to please,
will yield righteousness ( for this world) and merit( for the next world).


சிறுமையுள் நீங்கிய இன்சொல் மறுமையும்
இம்மையும் இன்பந் தரும்.                         98

மற்றவரைத் துன்புறுத்தாத இனிய சொற்கள்
இப்பிறப்பிலும்,அடுத்த பிறப்பிலும் இன்பத்தைத் தரும்.

Sweet kindly words, from meanness free, delight of heart,
In world to come and in this world impart.

Sweet speech,free from harm to others, will give pleasure
both in this world and in the next.


இன்சொல் இனிதீன்றல் காண்பான் எவன்கொலோ
வன்சொல் வழங்கு வது.                                    99

இனிய சொற்கள் சொல்பவர்க்கும் கேட்பவருக்கும்
மகிழ்சியைத் தருவதைக் காண்கின்றோம்.
அப்படி இருந்தும் கடுஞ்சொற்களைப் பேசுவது எதற்காக?

Why makethe use of  harsh, repellant words?

Why does he  use harsh words, who sees the pleasure
which sweet speech yields?


இனிய உளவாக இன்னாத கூறல்
கனியிருப்பக் காய்கவர்ந் தற்று.                 100

இனிய சொற்கள் குவிந்திருக்க, அதை விடுத்து,
கடுஞ்சொற்களைப் பேசுவது, கனிகள் நிறைந்திருக்க,
அவற்றை விட்டுக் காய்களைப் பறித்துண்பதற்கு நிகராகும்.

when pleasant words are easy, bitter words to use,
Is, leaving sweet ripe fruit, the sour unripe to choose.

To say disagreeable things when agreeable are at hand
is like eating unripe fruit when there is ripe.

இல்லறதோர் பொருள்களைக் காத்து வாழ்வதெல்லாம்
விருந்தினரை வரவேற்று உதவி செய்வதற்காகவே.

All household cares and course of daily life have this in view.
Guests to receive with courtesy , and kindly acts to do.

The whole design of living in the domestic state and laying up
(property) is (to be able) to exercise the benevolence of hospitality.



விருந்து புறத்ததாத் தானுண்டல் சாவா
மருந்தெனினும் வேண்டற்பாற் றன்று.                82

விருந்தினர் வீட்டிற்கு வெளியே இருந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் போது,
சாவா மருந்தான அமிர்தமேயானாலும் தான் மட்டும் உண்பது
விரும்பத்தக்கதல்ல.

Though food of immortality should crown the board,
Feasting alone, tyhe guests without unfed,is thing abhorred.

It is not fit that one should wish his guests to be outside(his house)
even though he were eating  the food of immortality.


வருவிருந்து வைகலும் ஓம்புவான் வாழ்க்கை
பருவந்த பாழ்படுதல் இன்று.                       83

தினமும் தன்னை விருந்தினர் நாடி வந்தாலும்
முகம் கோணாமல் உபசரிப்பவனுடைய வாழ்க்கை
வறுமையால் கஷ்டப்படுவதில்லை.

Each day he tends the coming guest with kindly care;
painless, unfailing plenty shall his household share.

The domestic life of the man that daily entertains the guests
who come to him shall not be laid waste by poverty.

அகனமர்ந்து செய்யாள் உறையும் முகனமர்ந்து
நல்விருந்து ஓம்புவான் இல்.                            84

முக மலர்ச்சியோடு நல்ல முறையில் விருந்தினரை
உபசரித்து வரும் இல்லத்தில் மனம் மகிழ்ந்து திருமகள்
வாசம் செய்வாள்.

With smiling face he entertains each virtuous guest,
'Fortune' with gladsome mind shall in his dwelling rest.

Lakshmi with joyous mind shall dwell in the house of that man
who,with cheerful countenance, entertains the good as guests.


வித்தும் இடல்வேண்டும் கொல்லோ விருந்தோம்பி
மிச்சில் மிசைவான் புலம்.                               85

விருந்தினருக்கு உணவளித்து , பின்னர் தான்
உண்ணுகின்றவனுடைய விளை நிலத்தில் விதையும்
விதைக்க வேண்டுமோ?

Who first regales his guest, and then himself supplies,
o'er all his fields, unsown, shall plenteous harvests rise.

Is it necessary to sow the field of the man who, having feastead
his guests, eats what may remain?


செல்விருந்து ஓம்பி வருவிருந்து பார்த்திருப்பான்
நல் விருந்து வானத் தவர்க்கு.                         86


வந்த விருந்தினரை உபசரித்து, வரக் கூடிய விருந்தினரை
எதிர்பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருப்பவனை தேவர்கள் உபசரிக்கக்
காத்துக் கொண்டிருப்பார்கள்.

The guest arrived he tends, the coming guest expects to see;
To those in heavenly homes that dwell a welcome guest is he.

He who, having entertained the guests that have come,
looks out for others who may yet come, will be a
welcome guest to the inhabitants of heaven.

இனைத்துணைத் தென்பதொன் றில்லை விருந்தின்
துணைத்துணை வேள்விப் பயன்.                       87

விருந்தோம்பல் என்ற யாகத்தின் பயனை இவ்வளவு

To reckon up the fruit of kindly deeds were all in vain;
their worth is as the worth of guests you entertain.

The advantages of benevolence cannot be measured;
the measure ( of the virtue) of the guests(entertained)
is the only measure.

பரிந்தோம்பிப் பற்றற்றேம் என்பர் விருந்தோம்பி
வேள்வி தலைப்படா தார்.                                    88

விருந்தினரைப் பேணி அதன் பயனை அடையாதவர்
தன் பொருளைக் காத்து (பின்னர் தொலைத்து)
ஆதரவற்றவர்களானோமே என வருந்துவர்.

With pain they guard their stores, yet' All forlorn are we,' they'll cry.
Who cherish not their guests, nor kindly help supply.

Those who have taken no part in the benevolence  of hospitality shall
( at length lament) saying," we have laboured and laid up wealth and
are now without support."


உடைமையுள் இன்மை விருந்தோம்பல் ஓம்பா
மடமை மடவார்கண் உண்டு.                        89

செல்வம் இருக்கும் காலத்தில் விருந்தினர் முன்
தரித்திரராகக் காட்டிக் கொள்ளுதல் அறியாமையாகும்.
அது விருந்தினரைப் புறக்கணிக்கச் செய்யும் மடமையாகும்.

 To turn from guests is penury,though worldly goods abound;
'Tis senseless folly,only with the senseless found.

That stupidity which excercises no hospitality is poverty in the
midst of wealth.It is the property of the stupid.



மோப்பக் குழையும் அனிச்சம் முகந்திரிந்து
நோக்கக் குழையும் விருந்து.                         90

அனிச்ச மலர் முகர்ந்து பார்த்தால் வாடிவிடும்.
விருந்தாளிகளோ முகம் கடுகடுத்தாலே வாடிவிடுவர்.

அன்பை மனத்துள் பூட்டி வைக்க முடியுமோ?
அவரது சிறு கண்ணீர் துளி உள்ளே இருக்கும்
அன்பை பலரும் அறிய வெளிப்படுத்திவிடும்.

And is there bar that can even love restrain?
The tiny tear shall make the lover's secret plain.

Is there any fasterning that can shut in love? Tears of the
affectionate will publish the love that is within.



அன்பிலார் எல்லாந் தமக்குரியர் அன்புடையார்
என்பும் உரியர் பிறர்க்கு.                           72

அன்பு இல்லாதவர்கள் எல்லாப் பொருள்களையும்
தமக்கே உரிமையாக்கிக் கொள்வர். அன்புடையவர்கள்
தன் உடம்பையும் பிறர்க்கு உரிமையாக்கி வாழ்வர்.

The loving men are others' to the very bone.

Those who are destitute of love appropriate all they have to
themselves; but those who possess love consider even their
bonesto belong to others.


அன்பொடு இயைந்த வழக்கென்ப ஆருயிர்க்கு

என்பொடு இயைந்த தொடர்பு.                              73

அருமையான உயிருக்கு உடலோடு கூடிய தொடர்பே

அன்போடு பொருந்தி வாழும் அறவாழ்க்கையின்

பயன் என்பர்.

Of precious soul with body's flesh and bone,
The union yields one fruit, the life of love alone.

They say that the union of soul and body in man is the
 fruit of the union of love and virtue(in a former birth).

அன்புஈனும் ஆர்வம் உடைமை அதுஈனும்
நண்பென்னும் நாடாச் சிறப்பு.                               74

மற்றவரிடம் பிரியம் கொள்ளச் செய்வது அன்பு.
அது எல்லோரிடமும் நட்பையும் நற்பெயரையும் பெற்றுத் தரும்.

From love fond yearning springs for union sweet of minds;
And that of bond of rare exelling friendship binds.

Love begets desire: and that(desire) begets the immeasureable
excellence of friendship.



அன்புற்று அமர்ந்த வழக்கென்ப வையகத்து
இன்புற்றார் எய்துஞ் சிறப்பு.                       75

உலகத்தில் சுகமாக வாழ்பவர் அன்புடையவர்
என்ற சிறப்பைப் பெற்றிருப்பார். அதுவே வாழ்வின் பயன்.

Sweetness on earth and rarest bliss above,
These are the fruits of tranquil life of love.

They say that the felicity which those who, after enjoying
the pleasure( of the conjugal state) in this world,
obtain in heaven is the result of their domestic state imbued
with love.



அறத்திற்கே அன்புசார் பென்ப அறியார்
மறத்திற்கும் அஃதே துணை.                      76

அன்பு அறத்திற்கு மட்டுமே துணை என்பர்
அறியாதவர். ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்தால் அது
வீரத்திற்கும் துணையாக இருக்கிறது.

The unwise deem love virtue only can sustain,
It also helps the man who evil would restrain.

The ignorant say that love is an ally to virtue only,
but it is also a help to get out of vice.



என்பி லதனை வெயில்போலக் காயுமே
அன்பி லதனை அறம்.                                        77

எலும்பு இல்லாத புழுவை வெயிலில் போட்டால்
துடித்து இறந்து விடும். அதுபோல் அன்பு இல்லாத
உடலைப் தரும தேவதை தண்டிக்கும்.

As sun's fierce ray dries up the boneless things,
So loveless beings virtue's power to nothing brings.

Virtue will burn up the soul which is without love, even as the
sun burns up the creature which is without bone,i.e.worms.


அன்பகத் தில்லா உயிர்வாழ்க்கை வன்பாற்கண்
வற்றல் மரந்தளிர்த் தற்று.                           78

மனதில் அன்பு இல்லாமல் வாழும் வாழ்க்கை
பாலைவனத்தில் மொட்டை மரம் தளிர்த்ததைப்
போன்றது.

The loveless soul, the very joys of life may know,
when flowers, in barren soil,on sapless trees,shall blow.

The domestic state of that man whose mind is without love is
like the flourishing of a withered tree upon the parched desert.



புறத்துறுப் பெல்லாம் எவன்செய்யும் யாக்கை
அகத்துறுப்பு அன்பி லவர்க்கு.                                 79

உடம்பின் உள் உறுப்பான அன்பு இல்லாதவரின்
உடலிலுள்ள வெளி உறுப்புக்கள் எல்லாம்
என்ன பயனைத் தரும்?

Though every outward part complete,the body's fitly framed;
what good, when soul within, of love devoid,lies halt and maimed?

Of what avail are all the external members( of the body) to those
who are destitute of love,the internal member.


அன்பின் வழியது உயிர்நிலை அஃதிலார்க்கு
என்புதோல் போர்த்த உடம்பு.                      80

உயிரின் இருப்பிடமே அன்பு வழியாக வரும்
தருமச் செயல்கள். அந்த அன்பு இல்லாதவர்களுக்கு
உள்ள உடம்பு எலும்பு, தோல் இவற்றால் போர்த்தப்பட்ட
உடம்பாகும்.

Bodies of loveless men are bony framework clad with skin;
Then is the body seat of life, when love resides within.

That body alone which is inspired with love contains
a living soul: if void of it,( the body) is bone overlaid
with skin.

அறியும் நல்ல மக்களைப் பெறுவது முதன்மையானது.

மற்ற பெருமைகளெல்லாம் அதன்பின்தான்!

Of all that men acquire, we Know not any greater gain,
Than that which by the birth of learned children men obtain.

Among all the benefits that may be acquired, we know no greater
benefit than the acquisition of intelligent children.


எழுபிறப்பும் தீயவை தீண்டா பழியிறங்காப்

பண்புடை மக்கட் பெறின்.                         62


பழிப்புக்கு இடமில்லாத நல்ல குழந்தைகளைப்

பெறுவது அவனை ஏழு பிறப்புகளிலும் துன்பங்கள்

அனுகாமல் காப்பாற்றும்.

who children gain, that none reproach, of virtuous worth,
No evils touch them, through the sev'n-fold maze of birth.

The evils of the seven births shall not touch those who obtain
 chldren of a good disposition,free from vice.

தம்பொருள் என்பதம் மக்கள் அவர்பொருள்

தம்தம் வினையான் வரும்.                         63


பிள்ளைகளை மக்கட்செல்வம் என்று சான்றோர் கூறுவார்கள்.

அச்செல்வம் அவரவர் செய்யும் வினைக்கேற்றபடி அமையும்.

'Man's children are his fortune,' say the wise;
From each one's deeds his varied fortunes rise.

Men will call their sons their wealth,because it flows through
the deeds which they(sons) perform on their behalf.

அமிழ்தினும் ஆற்ற இனிதேதம் மக்கள்

சிறுகை அளாவிய கூழ்.                                       64

தன் குழந்தைகளின் பிஞ்சுக் கைகளால் அளையப்பட்ட

உணவு பெற்றவர்களுக்கு அமிர்தத்தை விட இனிமை

உடையதாகும்.

மக்கள்மெய் தீண்டல் உடற்கின்பம் மற்றுஅவர்

சொற்கேட்டல் இன்பம் செவிக்கு.                             65


தன் குழந்தைகளின் உடம்பைத் தொடுவது தேகத்துக்கு

சுகத்தைத் தரும். அவர்களின் மழலைச் சொற்களைக்

கேட்பது செவிக்கு இன்பமாகும்.


குழலினிது யாழினிது என்பதம் மக்கள்

மழலைச்சொல் கேளா தவர்.                     66


தன் குழந்தைகளின் மழலைச் சொற்களைக் கேட்டு

மகிழாதவர்கள்தான் குழலிசையையும், யாழிசையையும்

இனியது என்று கூறுவர்.

'The pipe is sweet,''the lute is sweet,' by them't will be averred,
who music of their infants' lisping lips have never heard.

"The pipe is sweet,the lute is sweet," say those who have not heard
the prattle of their own children.
தந்தை மகற்குஆற்றும் நன்றி அவையத்து

முந்தி யிருப்பச் செயல்.                          67


தன் பிள்ளைகளைக் கல்வியில் மேம்படச் செய்து,

கற்றவர் சபையில் முதவனாயிருக்கச் செய்வதே

ஒரு தந்தை ஆற்றக்கூடிய உயர்ந்த நன்மையாகும்.

Sire greatest boon on son confers, who makes him meet,
In councils of the wise to fill the higest seat.

The benefit which a father should confer on his son is to give him
precedence in the assembly of the learned.


தம்மின்தம் மக்கள் அறிவுடைமை மாநிலத்து

மன்னுயிர்க் கெல்லாம் இனிது.                      68

தன் பிள்ளைகளின் அறிவுடைமை தனக்கு இன்பம்

தருவதை விட உலகத்தாருக்கெல்லாம் மிகுந்த நன்மையைத்

தருவது சிறப்பாகும்.

Their children's wisdom greater than their own confessed,
Through the wide world is sweet to every human breast.

That their children should posses knowledge is more pleasing
to all men of this great earth than to themselves.


ஈன்ற பொழுதிற் பெரிதுவக்கும் தன்மகனைச்

சான்றோன் எனக்கேட்ட தாய்.                     69


தன் குழந்தையை உலகத்தார் சான்றோன் என்று

கொண்டாடுவதைக் கேட்ட தாய், அவனைப் பெற்ற

பொழுதிற் கொண்ட மகிழ்சியை விட அதிக மகிழ்சியடைவாள்.

When mother hears him named'fulfill'd of wisdom's lore',
Far greater joy she feels, than when her son she bore.

The mother who hears her son called " a wise man"
will rejoice more than she did at his birth.


மகன்தந்தைக்கு ஆற்றும் உதவி இவன்தந்தை

என்னோற்றான் கொல்எனுஞ் சொல்.                 70


பிள்ளை தன் தந்தைக்குச் செய்யும் கைம்மாறு

" இவன் தந்தை இவனைப் பெற என்ன புண்ணியம்

 செய்தானோ" என்று ஊரார் புகழும்படிச் செய்வதேயாகும்.

To,sire,what best requital can by grateful child be done?
To make men say, 'what merit gained the father such a son?'

(so to act) that it may be said " by what great penance did his
father beget him," is the benefit which a son should render
to his father.
